William Mervine

Willam B. Mervine, 93, passed away at his home in Westport on Friday, July 4th, with his wife June by his side. He was born in New York City, October 15, 1920, son of Arthur E. and Ruth Weaver Mervine. Soon after, the family moved to Scarsdale. Bill attended Peddie, then graduated from Wesleyan University in 1947 and received an MBA from the NYU Stern School of Business. Bill enlisted in the U.S. Eighth Army Air Force after two years at Wesleyan. He was promoted to Tech Sgt. and completed 35 missions over Germany and German occupied territories in the 92nd Bombardment Group, the oldest heavy bombardment group in England. He was awarded the Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters and the Presidential Citation for meritorious achievement while participating in sustained bomber combat. He moved from Larchmont, NY, to Westport in 1964 with his wife June (Miller) Mervine, son Richard, and daughter Cheryl. Bill worked for Kaiser Aluminum for 20 years, becoming National Sales Manager, and then for Alcoa until he retired. He was a devoted member of Christ & Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, serving as an usher for many years. In his youth, he was an avid cartoonist, birdwatcher, and sports fan. Most notably, throughout his entire life, Bill was a consummate people person. He survived by his wife and daughter Cheryl Mervine of New York City. He is predeceased by his beloved son Richard and brother David W. Mervine. Friends are invited to celebrate Bill’s life in a service Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 4:00 pm at Christ & Holy Trinity Church, 75 Church Lane, Westport.
