FRANK SALVATORE “TIGER” DEMACE

Frank DeMace, the owner of the legendary Westport restaurant, Mario’s Place, died peacefully on Thursday, surrounded by his children and siblings.
Francis Salvatore DeMace was born at Norwalk Hospital on December 23, 19 33 to Josephine and Pasqual DeMace.
A life-long resident of Westport, he was a beloved figure to countless people whose lives he touched. As one friend said, “he did more things by accident for people than most of us have done intentionally.” He was known as a man of few words with a big heart and a generous spirit. The town is filled with stories of those whose careers he helped start or whose education he helped fund. He was a gentle man who couldn’t say “no” to anyone in need.
He served in 1951-54 in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, stationed in France during the Korean Conflict. He began his restaurant career, starting in 1955 at the old Arrow in Westport where he worked until 1967 when he opened Mario’s. Shunning the limelight, he would do every job in the restaurant, from washing the dishes and slicing the lemons to cooking the meatballs before the doors opened in the morning.
Many of his former employees have moved on to open restaurants throughout the region.
Known to his family and friends as “Tiger,” he was an avid bowler and golfer and a lifetime volunteer member of the Westport Fire Department, Saugatuck Hose Company No.4. He was honored by the Westport Sportsman Association, receiving its Citizen’s Award, and was a generous contributor to countless charities.
He is survived by his son, Dominic DeMace, and daughter, Lori Kosut and her husband, Fletcher Kosut; his beloved grandchildren, Frankie DeMace, Emma Rose DeMace, and Bronwynn Paz Viola Kosut; and his sister, Theresa DeMattia and brother, Dominick DeMace and one sister in law Judith G. Dwyer. He was predeceased by his sister, Marie Wallace and brothers, Michael and Joseph DeMace.
He will be sorely missed and forever remembered by his friends, too numerous to mention.
Services will be held on Sunday, July 29 from 4:00- 8:00 pm at the Harding Funeral Home 210 Post Road East, Westport and on Monday, July 30 at 10:00 am directly at the Church of the Assumption 98 Riverside Avenue in Westport. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital.

Jean Stringer Pierson, age 93, of Darien, CT and Delray Beach, FL, formerly of Westport, CT and St. Paul, MN, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 22nd at Meadow Ridge Health Center in Redding, CT.
Born on June 12, 1919 and raised in St. Paul, she was the daughter of McNeil Seymour and Louise Warren Stringer. She shared a birthday with her older brother Warnie, and when her mother and father returned home from the hospital with his new birthday baby, her brother asked, “Where’s my Babby?” This nickname stuck and she was known as Babby for her entire life. She attended Summit School and graduated from Central High School in 1937. Babby then attended Pine Manor Junior College in Wellesley, MA, before moving back to St. Paul where she held a variety of jobs including telephone operator at the Minnesota Federal Savings and Loan.
Despite a plethora of suitors, a fiercely independent Babby remained single until age 40. In her book, she believed there was no reason to get married until she met “the love of her life.” In the late 1950’s, she was reintroduced to John Pierson, an old family friend, and they were married on May 21st, 1960. Shortly after their wedding, Babby started her own interior decorating business with a partner in St. Paul, Jean-Alexandra’s. This business proved to be very successful and Babby continued to decorate with her usual flair and love of bright colors well into her late 70s.
Babby had many interests; she was an avid golfer twice winning the Club Championship at Somerset Country Club in St. Paul, MN, a die-hard Minnesota Vikings fan enduring many a monumental blizzard in the outdoor stadium in Bloomington, MN, and a devout Episcopalian. She loved flowers, travel, politics, anything patriotic, especially the American flag, making Lou’s Famous Lemon Cake for “those 2 boys” and playing bridge, but always most important to her were her family and friends. Whether in St. Paul, Delray Beach, Westport or Darien, Babby covered every surface with photographs of those she loved. She and her sister traveled thousands of miles in her white Ford Tempo, touring the United States and visiting everyone they knew. She had an infectious love of life, a wonderfully sarcastic sense of humor, robust health, and a competitive and opinionated spirit which, when combined with her genuine interest and delight in those around her, kept her surrounded by loved ones for all of the 93 years of her life.
She is survived by her 2 children, John Jay Pierson Jr (Jennifer) of Denver, CO and Julia Pierson Mombello (Michael) of Westport, CT; her 5 grandchildren including Edward “Mac” Mombello and Christopher Mombello of Westport, CT; her 4 great grandchildren; and her sister, Anne Warren Stringer Smith of Dallas, TX. She was pre-deceased by her 2 brothers, McNeil Seymour Stringer Jr and Warren Stringer.
A memorial service will be held at Christ and Holy Trinity Church in Westport, CT at 3 pm on Tuesday September 4th. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, JDRF, 200 Connecticut Avenue, Suite 4E, Norwalk, CT 06854 or online at www.jdrf.org (Click on the Donate tab on the right hand side and then select make a Memorial Donation.)
As a special tribute to Babby and in celebration of her lively, outgoing spirit, please consider wearing bright colors to this memorial service instead of traditional black. As Babby continued to emphasize until the very end of her life, “John doesn’t like me in black.” Condolences for the family may be left on line at www.hardingfuneral.com
