Jean Stringer Pierson, age 93, of Darien, CT and Delray Beach, FL, formerly of Westport, CT and St. Paul, MN, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 22nd at Meadow Ridge Health Center in Redding, CT.
Born on June 12, 1919 and raised in St. Paul, she was the daughter of McNeil Seymour and Louise Warren Stringer. She shared a birthday with her older brother Warnie, and when her mother and father returned home from the hospital with his new birthday baby, her brother asked, “Where’s my Babby?” This nickname stuck and she was known as Babby for her entire life. She attended Summit School and graduated from Central High School in 1937. Babby then attended Pine Manor Junior College in Wellesley, MA, before moving back to St. Paul where she held a variety of jobs including telephone operator at the Minnesota Federal Savings and Loan.
Despite a plethora of suitors, a fiercely independent Babby remained single until age 40. In her book, she believed there was no reason to get married until she met “the love of her life.” In the late 1950’s, she was reintroduced to John Pierson, an old family friend, and they were married on May 21st, 1960. Shortly after their wedding, Babby started her own interior decorating business with a partner in St. Paul, Jean-Alexandra’s. This business proved to be very successful and Babby continued to decorate with her usual flair and love of bright colors well into her late 70s.
Babby had many interests; she was an avid golfer twice winning the Club Championship at Somerset Country Club in St. Paul, MN, a die-hard Minnesota Vikings fan enduring many a monumental blizzard in the outdoor stadium in Bloomington, MN, and a devout Episcopalian. She loved flowers, travel, politics, anything patriotic, especially the American flag, making Lou’s Famous Lemon Cake for “those 2 boys” and playing bridge, but always most important to her were her family and friends. Whether in St. Paul, Delray Beach, Westport or Darien, Babby covered every surface with photographs of those she loved. She and her sister traveled thousands of miles in her white Ford Tempo, touring the United States and visiting everyone they knew. She had an infectious love of life, a wonderfully sarcastic sense of humor, robust health, and a competitive and opinionated spirit which, when combined with her genuine interest and delight in those around her, kept her surrounded by loved ones for all of the 93 years of her life.
She is survived by her 2 children, John Jay Pierson Jr (Jennifer) of Denver, CO and Julia Pierson Mombello (Michael) of Westport, CT; her 5 grandchildren including Edward “Mac” Mombello and Christopher Mombello of Westport, CT; her 4 great grandchildren; and her sister, Anne Warren Stringer Smith of Dallas, TX. She was pre-deceased by her 2 brothers, McNeil Seymour Stringer Jr and Warren Stringer.
A memorial service will be held at Christ and Holy Trinity Church in Westport, CT at 3 pm on Tuesday September 4th. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, JDRF, 200 Connecticut Avenue, Suite 4E, Norwalk, CT 06854 or online at www.jdrf.org (Click on the Donate tab on the right hand side and then select make a Memorial Donation.)
As a special tribute to Babby and in celebration of her lively, outgoing spirit, please consider wearing bright colors to this memorial service instead of traditional black. As Babby continued to emphasize until the very end of her life, “John doesn’t like me in black.” Condolences for the family may be left on line at www.hardingfuneral.com
